The daughter of the late Susan Torres and husband Jason died yesterday. Susan Torres was declared brain dead but kept alive via artificial means for 12 weeks in an effort to increase the likelihood of survival of her unborn child. Born at approximately 29 weeks, the baby was 13.5 inches long and weighed 1 pound 13 oz. While the mortality rate for premature births decreases substantially at week 24, babies born prior to week 30 are at very high risk for morbidities of prematurity that affect the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems.
According to the linked article, Susan Anne Catherine Torres died of heart failure after emergency surgery to repair a perforated intestine - it's more likely she died of septic shock/multi-organ failure and that the GI surgery was due to necrotizing enterocolitis which is common in premies such as this.
